Legend

The Africa Leadership Change (ALC) dataset comprehensively accounts for the ways leaders reach and leave power in the region, records how these practices have evolved since modern independent countries emerged on the continent and allows for investigations into their broader implications. The dataset covers all leaders that held office in all fifty-four African states starting from 1960 (or subsequent year of independence).

Number of country-year units of analysis (as of 29 February 2020): 2933
Number of leaders recorded (as of 29 February 2020): 409 (including interim leaders)
Number of leadership changes mapped (as of 29 February 2020): 355

The ALC dataset is a project developed by Giovanni Carbone (ISPI and Università degli Studi di Milano) and Alessandro Pellegata (Università degli Studi di Milano).
